Census estimates released on Thursday, March 16, 2006, rank Maricopa County number one nationally in population gains for the year ending July 1, 2005, and since the 2000 census. That is the equivalent of 375 new people arriving in the Valley every day. They arrive here from all over the globe. 23 percent are from foreign countries.  Another 46 percent arrive here from across the United States and 31 percent from births minus deaths. A staggering 61.2% of Arizona cities population lives in Maricopa County making it the third largest county in the nation, behind Los Angeles and Cook (Chicago) counties.
