Azulera Resort Village Costa Rica
Hyatt Azulera Golf Course by Greg Norman
Designed by the legendary Greg Norman and opening in 2008, the Azulera golf course is truly unique. Here you will experience a spectacular landscape where the land meets the water along the Pacific coast of Guanacaste province. 18 holes of flawless green that emerges from the natural terrain as if by nature's design, where players stroll under magnificent native trees and breathe the perfume of Costa Rica's tropical flowers. A challenging course where the back nine winds through rolling foothills and across jungle terrain, revealing dramatic yet playable elevation changes.
Blending artistry, strategy and a commitment to environmental stewardship, the Greg Norman-designed championship golf course at Azulera will provide exciting, world-class play in a setting of stunning natural beauty. Each hole will be planned around the natural topography and native vegetation, preserving the trees, creeks and other natural features that set this site apart from all others... and weaving the course into what the land has naturally provided.
Together with Costa Rica's forestry officials, we have walked the planned golf course site to identify the plant species that will be protected and maintained-finding ways to shape the course around the trees on the site, rather than eliminating them. In keeping with our philosophy of "least disturbance," we are making every effort to avoid changing the natural environment as it exists on the site... instead incorporating the unique native rainforest vegetation and terrain into the course itself.
It's an exciting time for golf in Costa Rica! The championship course at Azulera will continue to follow Costa Rica's vision for high caliber golf courses. Greg Norman Golf Course Design is proud to be a part of Costa Rica's future as a premier vacation and golf destination, as we help share the country's unique culture and incredible natural environment with travelers from around the world.
18 Hole Champion Golf Course
The Norman course at Azulera combines two very diverse halves. The front nine begins with a tee shot from a knoll overlooking Azulera's western shore, framed by the Pacific Ocean and Playa Conchal. Moving on from this memorable introduction, the course experience only gets better as the remaining holes play through a more tropical jungle terrain with towering Guanacaste trees and natural creeks.
The fairways of the back nine weave through canyons and jungle terrain into the foothills, with with uphill and downhill holes and dramatic yet playable elevation changes. Hole 17, par 3 drops 100 feet from tee to green. Hole 18, par 5 also drops 100 feet from tee to green.
Enviornmental Philosophy
In recent years, all designers and developers have taken a more responsible approach toward the environment, and I'm proud that we often lead our development partners to more deeply explore issues pertaining to the environment and land planning. In addition to being fully conscious of environmentally sensitive properties that include wetlands or sites with endangered native plant life, we also spend considerable time in the design process identifying ways to utilize the greatest number of trees on a site, rather than eliminate them. Often, we establish routings that use these trees as turning points to shape a series of holes and offer suggestions to our development partners on how these woodlands also will enhance property values. It is not only our desire to create a great golf course, but also to find a perfect balance between maximizing the value of the residential component and creating a plan that is conducive to protecting its surroundings.
